As artikeldb said, maybe you should use a solution with bean bag next time. With that said - it's some great photos of the lions!

Dried rice is a good option as well.

great photos and a really good explanation on how to use the flash for wildlife too, think i should consider taking my flash with me instead of leaving it at home, seems like its worth the extra weight!

great photos! maybe i shoot consider the solution with bean bag next time i'm gonna travel and i rent a big lens, instead of always carrying my tripod, and great tip with buying the dried rice or something else at the location so it doesnt take up 2 kg of allowed travel weight!

Good comparison of those excellent lenses which confirms that I made right decision by emptying my purse for 300f2.8 VR instead of 200-400. It replaced Sigma 150-500 (used it only one year) and Nikon 70-300 VR. As an amateur I could not imagine how much faster and sharper this lens is. It also seems to work nice with new TC20 III. Im really waiting for spring and birds moving to the north.

Sir :
first, how much is that filter holder for Nikon 14-24mm lens and where to order ?
second, that filter will affect the camera angles? for example, the wild angle will be
        narrowing ?
        Thank you very much!
                                    Fernando

Beautiful pix and a great post. Of your primes i have all but the 24 1.4 and i am sorely tempted after reading your post. It is expensive but i always favour the wide apertures over the one-lens-fits-all options.
Cheers for taking the time to write this.

Simon, Its OK to crop either the nose or tail of the bike. I prefer to shoot tight and show the rider working, rather than shoot loose. One of the problems with going to FX format when shooting bikes, is that a 300mm lens is often too short, and even a 500mm lens is as well. I have both D2Xs and D3,and it really showed when comparing the amount of " space" around the bike when using the 500mm lens on its own. I had to use the 500mm F4 + a TC14E and I was still shorter than a 500mm lens fitted on the D2Xs. Of course, the firing rate on the D3 is much better. However, I achieved some excellent shots with the D2Xs, and the detail that came up in the leathers was amazing.

Interesting report. I lived in TOKYO for 4 years, and have been to Japan on numerous occasions since 1988 . The YODOBASHI shop that you referred to in West Shinjuku was my happy shopping ground for NIKON products. The shops in the GINZA are far too expensive, and cater for the rich tourists in the GINZA. YODOBASHI and BIG CAMERA were the best, but, YODOBASHI was my favorite. Second hand stores that have a good reputation, are, MAP CAMERA in SHINJUKU, and FUJIYA CAMERA in NAKANO, which is 15 minutes by train, going west from Shinjuku.

Hello

I stumbled across this post looking for a camera bag for my Nikon 600mm VRII and I noticed the statement about hand holding the lens. I agree its almost impossible to handhold, but here are two great images taken with a Nikon D3X and 600mm Lens standing in a 14ft aluminium Boat with V-shape bottom and my wife driving the boat. These are legit hand held 600mm photographs, actually one is the photo we have always dreamed of taking.

I can clearly recommend the Lowepro Classified 160 bag. Although it is easier to fit a D700 than a D3, I manage to get a D700+MB-D10 attached into it and that combo is slightly taller than a D3. The bag has enough space for a camera with 70-200 lens attached plus one additional lens, so it could fit your needs well.

Great comparison of those two lenses! I am currently thinking about which one would fit my needs best. I currently shoot with the 70-300 VR, but I would like to have a long lens that is faster, both in terms of aperture and AF-speed.
After reading your post, I have one more question: how do the two lenses compare in terms of image quality and AF-speed when used at about the same focal length (i.e. 200-400 vs. 300 + 1.4x TC and 200-400 + 1.4x TC vs. 300 + 2x TC)?

Please also feel free to check out my new blog at
www.rap-photography.com

Hi Simon,

Great review man, and a story that finaly tells the the true problem about the 2-400..
Like you said the 2-400 is a great lens and the zoom is a big advantage but like the most wildlife photographers we have to work sometimes in not so ideal condition of light.
And that is the big problem with the 2-400 against the 300.

Keep this good work going and al the best for you and your family

I have this one:

http://products.lowepro.com/product/DryZone-200,1935,18.htm

The LowePro Dryzone 200. Only bag I could find that holds a D1 or D2h with zoom lens attached.

They now have the "rover" too, which is more compact, but not sure if it holds a mounted lens with a big D.

With the weather in Holland (or Belgium for that matter), waterproof is a must !

If you want to see it before you shell out 300+ Euros, feel free to drop by mate ;)

@Milliped: Yes, and a pretty heavy duty one at that. Although the lens does have VR (image stabilisation) the sheer weight of the lens makes it pretty much impossible to hand hold for more than a couple of minutes, so I use Gitzo legs together with a Manfrotto fluid video head.

Nice article, it helped me understand a few things, but I still have a question. If the 85mm becomes the equivalent of 127mm, then what is the appropriate lens to get for the same qualities in the DX format? I have a 500 1.8 and I like it a lot but I wish I could stand a little farther away from the subject sometimes.

Hi Kate,

Thanks for the comment. Whether I adjust flash settings really depends on what I am shooting. Most of the time, I adjust settings on the camera, and then let the flashgun do its own magic. I do find however that when I am using it during the day for relatively close subjects, I need to underexpose the flash compensation between 1 and 2 stops - experimenting normally finds me th right value.

The settings on the camera are more important, as this is where I can determine if I am going to use slow sync, rear shutter sync, etc.

What is also important, especially when shooting action, is to adjust the top sync speed within the camera config menu. I saw you shoot with the D70, and can't remember exactly what the top limit is there, but i think it is 1/250s. With the D200 that I use, it is possible to sync at any speed (or at least the camera will try and sync the flash), which can be very useful.

For 'action' I typically leave the flash in the hotshoe - the main advantage of using a bracket is to get rid of shadows and redeye on people, so not needed there. If I had the time to set things up, there are definitely occassions when setting up off camera would be nice, but with wildlife photography, I generally don't have the time.

For portrait/people photography, I also use the flash in the hotshoe, but use a Gary Fong Lightsphere, which is basically a glorified diffuser, and gives me a really nice soft light. I also use the diffuser that comes with the SB-800 if I don't feel like carrying the lightsphere.

Hope that helps!

Wow, this is really interesting. I just clicked thru from flickr, and you're addressing an issue here that I'm just starting to have. I've been shooting outdoor landscapes and adventure photography for a year or so now, and I just bought myself a flash in the hopes that I might lift some of the shadows in my climbing shots.

How often do you adjust settings for your flash? Do you leave it in the hotshoe or move it around for better direction? Do you use a diffuser at all?

I kind of feel lately that I've started over from scratch with this , and it's intimidating. I'll link to your blog and check back for advice.

Thanks! - Kate
(colocalders.com)

Well, when I bought it 2 years ago, the price was 98€..... seems now though that Nikon has raised the price, and now the cheapest I can find it in the Netherlands is around €129. Guess it goes to show the increased popularity of the lens. Still a bargain though....

Yes, there are two tools: one is the red eye removal tool, and the other is the 'remove spots' tool, which can be used in either heal or clone mode to get rid of dust spots, or skin blemishes etc.

It's not as universal as the equivalent Photoshop tools, but looks like it will do the job in many cases.

Hi Jasper,

Always time to read a good book ;)

I would say the main benefit of strobist blog (and the associated flickr group) is that it is interactive - you can ask questions and solicit responses from all of the readers. Another big difference is that David has very much taken a low cost approach to his photography, whereas for Michael money doesn't seem to be an object.

And the traditional format of a book still has a certain amount of longevity over the click and forget format of a blog....

Hi Jasper,
I think that the medium he has used to display his retouch jobs (i.e. a printed book) have led to a degradation in the quality.... but if you view them in conjunction with the words he uses, and follow through with the companion CD, it makes a lot of sense...
Thanks for stopping by,
Simon
